Shopping

Shopping

Washington Street Mall

Cape May is home to the Washington Street Mall, an outdoor walking mall spanning three blocks, with brick pathways, decorative fountains, and wooden benches surrounding garden planters.

Shopping in Cape May is basically concentrated on the mall, the Washington Commons, Carpenter’s Square Mall (located behind the Washington Street Mall on Carpenter’s Lane), the beachfront, and West Cape May, primarily where West Perry Street meets Park Boulevard.

Outdoor

Outdoor & Nature

The Beach

Cape May City’s beaches are family friendly, clean, and close to restrooms and food. They run approximately 2.5 miles parallel to Beach Avenue and are within walking distance from most accommodations.

Cape May Lighthouse

Lighthouse Avenue Cape May Point, Cape May, NJ 08204

More than 2.5 million visitors have climbed the lighthouse since it opened to the public in 1988. For those who choose not to climb, the Oil House on the grounds contains a fully accessible Visitors’ Orientation Center and Museum Shop carrying souvenirs, books, and maritime items.

The Army Corps of Engineers began construction on the Cape May Lighthouse in 1857. The cost was $40,000. The present tower, the third documented lighthouse at the southern tip of New Jersey, has always been an attention-getting landmark as well as an aid-to-navigation for mariners. It was first lit in 1859. Because it is adjacent to the community of Cape May Point and just two miles from the city of Cape May, NJ, it has drawn visitors throughout its history.

Tickets are available to climb the lighthouse. Visit Cape May MAC’s website for more information and times.

Cape May Point State Park

303 County Hwy 629, Cape May, NJ 08204

Reach the 244-acre Cape May Point State Park by bike, car, or foot if you don’t mind a hike down the beach. The park is home to iconic landmarks including the Cape May Lighthouse, Fire Control Tower 23, and Battery 223 (aka “the bunker”), the remains of a harbor defense battery from World War II.

The park is free to the public, an ideal location for birding, picnics, painting, photography, and nature walks. Explore ponds, coastal dunes, marshes, and forest habitat on one of the three hiking trails that range from 0.5 to 2 miles in length. Along the trails are occasional benches and birding blinds. Wear sturdy walking shoes if you’re headed down the Yellow or Blue trails, as parts of the trail will take you through wooded areas that may be muddy! The shortest, the Red Trail, is entirely on a raised footpath and wheelchair accessible. Download a detailed trail guide from the state’s website.

Cape May Promenade

Beach Avenue, Cape May, NJ 08204

Cape May’s promenade runs parallel to Beach Avenue and stretches for nearly two miles, taking you on a scenic walk or run past Cape May’s beaches. Though it’s sometimes referred to as a boardwalk, our promenade is actually paved (the last wooden boardwalk was destroyed in the 1962 nor’easter).

The promenade is your gateway to the beach and unparalleled views of the ocean. There are a handful of businesses along the way, including candy stores, arcades, and ice cream.

Explore the Historic Houses

Take a walk or bike ride through the many side streets of Cape May to admire the old Victorian homes.
