Our Story

How We Met

After a month or more of texting, calling, and face-timing, I agreed to go on a date with Arleigh. I knew I didn’t want to just go to dinner and risk being too awkward for a lively conversation. While thinking over wholesome date ideas in the city, I remembered as a child my aunt would take me and my cousins to the Civic Center to go ice skating. As a shot in the dark, I offered up the idea, thinking as someone from up north, surely he knew how to ice skate (boy was I wrong).
The night of our date was quickly approaching, and I realized I was scared to go on a date with a man I had only ever spoken to on the phone but never met in person. Being the good hearted man he is, Arleigh agreed to let me bring two friends on the date to make
me more comfortable. Not only did he pay for all of our dinners, and skate rentals, but I later find out he had also purchased a truck THAT DAY in order to make it to the date.
As if that wasn’t enough paired with the gentleman he had been, but on our second official date, he drove 3 hours to spend New Years with my family and I. In that moment I knew, anyone that was willing to put in that much effort for someone they had just met was someone I wanted to fight for and love for the rest of my life.

The Proposal

On our 4 year anniversary, December 20th 2022, Arleigh took me to the place where everything first started, the Savannah Civic Center. To me, it was just supposed to be an anniversary celebration on a Tuesday night. Little did I know, he had other plans. I remember before we even left I asked him what I should wear and he told me to wear something casual like blue jeans and a t-shirt, but something told me to wear something nicer ( THANK GOD ).
When we arrived everything was pretty normal, the only surprising thing being the immense amount of people there for a weeknight. For the first hour or so, everything went about as one would expect - with Arleigh living up to his nickname and looking like a baby giraffe struggling to stay up on the ice. However, about halfway through the skating time, Arleigh told me he only wanted to go one more lap before leaving. A little reluctantly I agreed and we started on our last lap. About halfway around the rink Arleigh “pretended” to fall ( he actually fell ) and as he was getting up, lifted one knee. As soon as I turned around and locked eyes with him I knew what was going on, but was too shocked to believe it. Overwhelmed with emotions and eyes brimming with tears the words “will you marry me?” left his mouth. My hands flew to my mouth and still in a state of shock I gasped out “nooo” as a response. Immediately his face fell and I registered what I had said. As quickly as possible I repeated a series of yeses in hopes of fixing my mistake. His face immediately lit back up as I leaned down and kissed him. In a blur I remember a round of applause from everyone in the rink, and a photographer speeding up behind us and telling us to smile as she snapped photos of our special moment.
Not long after that we left the rink, receiving a ton of “ congratulations” on the way out. The rest of the evening flew by with us going to get dinner with some friends that had been hiding in the bleachers and a photo shoot throughout Savannah’s downtown district in the beauty of the christmas lights set up at that time of year.
